Solids take much longer to empty, and a typical, safe window is 6–8 hours before induction. This combination minimizes gastric volume and acidity at the time of airway management. Therefore, the guideline of solids 6–8 hours and clear liquids 2 hours before surgery best balances safety and practicality. The other options either underestimate solid gastric emptying time or over- or under-estimate the time needed for liquids, which would raise aspiration risk.
